Recontextualisation
The recontextualisation of my previous satirical work is an ongoing process of my long term painting practice. My Phd contextualised satire within an accessible and readable framework. Later in my thesis I discussed the levels of understanding of satirical codification and argued that satirical elements can continue to be accessed even when the visual style is deconstructed, lessening the strength of codification present within the visual language. The prospective change in style has its origins in a previous thread of enquiry and interpretation that began in 2010. During this time I sought to formulate a progressive style of painting with a view to broadening the boundaries of contemporary painting through an original progressive style. My thesis has outlined my intensions in this regard, with my painting 'Sale' included as an example of future work development. I have reorganised my website and now show my current work on the first page which outlines this line of enquiry. Although I have created purely abstracted work throughout my career, I see this current deconstruction process with this timeframe. It is possible to observe a career of deconstruction beginning with realism, although my very first oil painting was an abstract piece when I was 12. You may observe that within my current work the starting position was one of discernible representationalism, progressing through a transitionary process, ending with a sub-abstracted position.
An example of my deconstruction process outlined within the Phd thesis is below:
To achieve this progression in style The new style will enable a continuation of my current ideas and functions, within a newly constructed framework. I will not produce the older work literally, rather, I will reformulate the design, form, and colouration to encompass this new visual aesthetic, figures will be further anonymised by removing facial features, pertaining to the non ethnicity of the universality of alter modernism. The same mechanisms of satirical intention, and proliferation through contextualised means will remain intact. The original dimensions of the previous work will change, as will the medium support. My new work direction will also be exhibited within the context of my drawings, I will demarcate the older work from the new, occasionally this new work on paper will also be supplemented through wet and dry media colouration.
